UF GraphicUltrafiltration (UF) is a membrane technology used to filter water and is somewhat similar to reverse osmosis (RO), but with several key differences. The UF membrane filtration process uses standard home water pressure to push water through its semi-permeable, hair-thin membrane. This is done on demand without the need for boost pumps or holding tanks, a major difference when compared to RO systems. By using hollow fiber membranes UF drinking water systems are able to filter suspended particles and materials of high molecular weight down to 0.02 microns. This includes contaminates such as bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts. To put this into perspective, 0.02 microns is approximately 5,000 times smaller than a human hair!

One of the things UF does not remove is dissolved minerals and salts from the water. This is important because many of these minerals are good for you and help make water taste like water. When all of these minerals are stripped away, as they are in reverse osmosis, the water that remains is feels void and tasteless. UF provides great, healthy drinking water while keeping the filter system simple and efficient. It is for these reasons we have ingratiated an Enpress whole-house UF system to portable water filtration system. Its efficiency and low energy requirements are a perfect fit. Come check us out and try the water, we know you’ll love it as much as we do!
